Quizás te preguntes de dónde salieron estos hombres que hablan con el Señor en el Evangelio de hoy. Están de pie frente a Jesús y fueron testigos de cómo sanó a un hombre mudo. El Evangelio dice que la multitud quedó “maravillada” y, a continuación, dice que “le pedían una señal milagrosa”. Esperate, ¿acaban de presenciar un milagro y ahora piden una señal? Parecería que lo que acababan de ver y oír fue suficiente para dejarlos atónitos. Pero no fue suficiente. “Dame más y más”, parecen decir.

Ahora, en mis años dorados, tiendo a ver algunas de las historias bíblicas de una forma un poco diferente – lo digo en plan positivo. Ahora que mi vida es un poco más tranquila y calmada y más cercana al Señor, me doy cuenta de muchas cosas pequeñas que habrían pasado desapercibidas en el pasado. A mi esposa siempre le ha gustado la naturaleza, especialmente las flores. Una de nuestras hijas tiene un don para los arreglos florales. A ella también le encanta la belleza de las flores y tiene un gran don para arreglarlas. Dios les ha dado a las dos una señal de la belleza que Él pone delante de ellas. Gracias a ellas, ahora tengo una mayor apreciación por la belleza y el milagro de las flores también.

Una de las señales que he recibido de la belleza de Dios y de que Él realmente existe son los niños, especialmente los bebés. Mi hermana es 12 años menor que yo. Cuando nació, vi algo enviado del cielo. Cuando era bebé, me sentaba en el borde de la cama en su habitación y la miraba fijamente en la cuna. Meditaba sobre cómo Dios podía hacer una obra tan maravillosa. Cuando ella fue creciendo un poco y yo cumplí 16 años, la llevaba a todas partes en mi Buick viejo del año 1954. Salíamos a pasear y no me importaba lo que la gente pensara cuando veía a esa niñita sentada a mi lado.

¿También necesitamos una señal? ¿Qué no ha hecho Dios para ayudarnos a darnos cuenta de que realmente existe? No necesitamos una señal para ayudarnos a creer en Él. ¿Por qué? Porque Él nos muestra todos los días cuánto nos ama y realmente se preocupa por nosotros. Te invito a que prestes atención durante todo el día y veas todas las pequeñas cosas que Él hace por ti. ¡Te vas a sorprender!

¿Por qué no tratamos de abrir un poco más el corazón y entregárselo a Él? Está esperando y esperando y esperando que lo hagamos. Quiere que estemos totalmente entregados y que nos acerquemos a Él. Echa un vistazo a tu tiempo de oración actual y pregúntate si se puede mejorar. Es probable que se pueda, y con pequeños sacrificios te acercarás aún más al Señor. Y así, Su voz se escuchará más fuerte.

Freedom’s Fence / La valla de la libertad

Thousands of years of salvation history were fulfilled with the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ. The long-awaited Messiah had come. So that’s it? Show’s over? Hardly.

The arrival of our Savior ushered in the last chapter of salvation history where all that was promised to God’s chosen people was fulfilled in his Son. His followers then embark on a new journey to share the Good News. We do not throw out the old for the new. Rather, the old provides a firm foundation on which to build the new. As Fr. Thomas Weinandy explains, “By contemplating Scripture within the living apostolic tradition, the Church grows, throughout the ages, in its understanding of what has been divinely revealed. Development of doctrine is this growth in understanding and expression of what has been revealed.” (Weinandy, Fr. Thomas, O.F.M. CAP. “What Does it Mean for Doctrine to Develop?” Catholic.com. Some aspects of the Church have developed over the years in order to reflect greater wisdom and understanding of revealed Truth, but nothing new in the Church replaces or contradicts what came before it. Just as a parent’s rules for her children adapt as the child grows up, but the foundational basis of those rules remains the same – to help the child develop conscience and a moral compass. The expression of God’s guidance for us has also evolved over time, but the foundational Truth of those rules has not changed, nor can it. Our perfect Heavenly Father put His commandments in place not for His good, but for ours, and they are not ours to change.

God’s rules, His commands, His demands of us, can be seen as limits to our freedom, but they are quite the opposite. Those perfect fences actually expand our freedom. Playground builders found that in playgrounds designed without fences, children tended to stay near the center of the play space, close to their caregivers. In playgrounds that included fencing, though, children explored much a broader space, feeling safer and freer within the defined limits. God provides the playgrounds of our lives with similar limits – not barriers to our freedom, but defining how we can most fully explore that freedom.

Throughout history there have been grumblings that the Church must pull down those fences, must get with the times and accommodate shifting cultural mores. The parable of GK Chesterton’s fence reminds us that before we do away with a particular barrier, it is important to understand why it was put in place. Before any of us “relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches men so” in the name of well-meaning but misplaced compassion or progress, perhaps we need to have the humility to explore why God built those fences in the first place. Ultimately, when we put our trust in God’s design, our freedom will be fuller.

Miles de años de historia de la salvación se cumplieron con el misterio pascual de Jesucristo. El Mesías tan esperado había llegado. ¿Así que ya estuvo? ¿Se acabó el show? Para nada.

La llegada de nuestro Salvador marcó el comienzo del último capítulo de la historia de la salvación, donde todo lo prometido al pueblo elegido de Dios se cumplió en su Hijo. Algunos aspectos de la Iglesia se han desarrollado a lo largo de los años para reflejar una mayor sabiduría y comprensión de la Verdad revelada, pero nada nuevo en la Iglesia reemplaza o contradice lo que vino antes. Así como las reglas de un padre para sus hijos se adaptan a medida que el niño crece, pero la base fundamental de esas reglas sigue siendo la misma: ayudar al niño a desarrollar la conciencia y una moral rectora. The Word Became Flesh / El Verbo se hizo carne

Today we bow down before a great mystery: the Incarnation. The simple words of the Gospel convey a Truth that would be unbelievable if it were not revealed to us so clearly. This mysterious truth is that the omnipotent, infinite God leapt down from the heavenly throne (Wisdom 18:15) and became man within the womb of a young virgin in an obscure village, in order to set us free for life in Him forever.

Gabriel’s announcement expresses something and someone absolutely unique: the Davidic King whose reign will have no end, the Messiah who will save humankind from their sin, the One who will fulfill every prophecy about the House of Jacob, will be conceived by this grace-filled virgin.

The very Word of God will become flesh to dwell among us (Jn 1:14).

How? Invisible to human eyes, the Holy Spirit will come upon this young girl, and she will be overshadowed by the power of the Most High – a power that does things that seem impossible to us, but that does not annihilate us. A gentle omnipotence, ever working with mighty calm to save us, heal us, set us free, and draw us into His love and life.

Mary, “full of grace” from her own conception, understands her role in God’s plan of salvation. In the name of and for the sake of all humanity, her heart – bursting with love and humility and desire for all to be saved and for God’s will to be done in all things – says yes to this plan and all it will demand of her. She cannot see all the details, but she knows the Scriptures well enough to know that it will cost her much to be the mother of the Suffering Servant who comes to save us. But she cannot say no to the One her heart loves.

Her courageous and generous “yes” reversed Eve’s selfward “no” and opened the way for Christ to undo all the damage done by Original Sin. Her yes was spoken for all of humanity, to make it possible for each and every person to be set free from the ancient curse of sin and death. As we hear her humble fiat, we rejoice that God keeps His Promises, that Mary is the Mother of God and our Mother, and that Jesus came to save us.

Let us ask Mary, the perfect model of complete openness and the one who gives a ready “yes” to whatever the Spirit moves within her, to go before the Throne of Grace and intercede for us, that we too might give our courageous and generous “yes” to whatever God asks of us.

Hoy nos inclinamos ante un gran misterio: la Encarnación. Las sencillas palabras del Evangelio nos transmiten una Verdad que sería increíble si no nos fuera revelada con tanta claridad. Esta misteriosa verdad es que el Dios omnipotente e infinito descendió del trono celestial (Sb 18,15) y se hizo hombre en el seno de una joven virgen en un pueblo oscuro, para liberarnos para poder vivir con Él para siempre.

El anuncio de Gabriel expresa algo y alguien absolutamente único: el Rey davídico cuyo reinado no tendrá fin, el Mesías que salvará a la humanidad de su pecado, Aquel que cumplirá todas las profecías sobre la Casa de Jacob, será concebido por esta virgen llena de gracia.

El mismo Verbo de Dios se hará carne para habitar entre nosotros (Jn 1,14).

¿Cómo? Invisible a los ojos humanos, el Espíritu Santo descenderá sobre esta jovencita, y será cubierta por el poder del Altísimo, un poder que hace cosas que a nosotros nos parecen imposibles, pero que no nos aniquila. Una omnipotencia dulce, que siempre trabaja con poderosa calma para salvarnos, sanarnos, liberarnos y atraernos hacia su amor y su vida.

María, “llena de gracia” desde su propia concepción, comprende su papel en el plan de salvación de Dios. En nombre de y por el bien de toda la humanidad, su corazón – rebosante de amor, humildad y deseo de que todos se salven y de que se haga la voluntad de Dios en todas las cosas – dice sí a este plan y a todo lo que le exigirá. No puede ver todos los detalles, pero conoce las Escrituras lo suficiente como para saber que le costará mucho ser la madre del Siervo Sufriente que viene a salvarnos. Pero no puede decir no a Aquel que su corazón ama.

Su valiente y generoso “sí” revirtió el “no” egoísta de Eva y abrió el camino para que Cristo deshiciera todo el daño causado por el pecado original. Su sí fue pronunciado para toda la humanidad, para hacer posible que cada persona sea liberada de la antigua maldición del pecado y la muerte. Al escuchar su humilde fiat, nos regocijamos de que Dios cumpla sus promesas, de que María sea la Madre de Dios y Madre nuestra, y de que Jesús haya venido a salvarnos.

Pidamos a María, modelo perfecto de apertura total y la que da un “sí” inmediato a todo lo que el Espíritu mueve dentro de ella, que vaya ante el Trono de la Gracia e interceda por nosotros, para que también nosotros podamos dar nuestro valiente y generoso “sí” a todo lo que Dios nos pida.

Unexpected Courage in Humility / La valentía inesperado dentro de la humildad

Going home isn’t always easy. Early in His public ministry, Jesus returns to Nazareth. Word of His wonders has begun to spread and even whispers of “Messiah.” Could this really be the one? Joseph’s boy? Imagine if a kid you grew up with turned out to be the savior of the world. Really? That guy?

But there He is, sitting with them in synagogue. He knows what they are thinking; the people want Him to do in Nazareth what they have heard He has done in Capernaum. But Jesus is not there to razzle-dazzle. He is home to deliver a message. Have faith, he seems to say. It’s going to be harder for you to believe because you have grown up with me, but have faith. Expect the unexpected. He reminds them of their shared history when God wove the story of salvation with unexpected threads. Jesus is there to tell these beloved people that here is another unexpected thread.

Then, as if to prove His point, they turn on Him. They become filled with wrath. These people who’ve known Jesus since He was a boy become so angry at His message that they carry Him to the edge of town and plan to hurl Him over a cliff. Yes, going home can be difficult, indeed.

Would we respond differently? The people of Jesus’ time were not unlike the people of today. Like them, we have a faith tradition that we know and trust. We are comforted by the familiar message but when that message demands the uncomfortable, we can bristle. When our faith teaches what we don’t want to hear or insists on teaching a moral standard that is difficult to live by, our arrogance demands that the faith must change rather than our hearts. The arrogance that stirred the rage in that Nazareth synagogue continues to stir. And, just like back then, the only antidote is humility.

Humility stands before the challenges of faith and prays for strength. Humility begs for the gifts of the Holy Spirit to temper our arrogance: wisdom, understanding, counsel, knowledge, piety, fear of the Lord, and, of course, fortitude. Courage. Courage to be shaped by our faith rather than demanding it be shaped by us, and courage to recognize the face of our Savior in unexpected places.

Ultimately the crowd did not succeed in throwing Jesus off the cliff because “passing through the midst of them, he went away.” (Luke 4:30). In their fury, they could not see what was right before them – the Messiah, the Savior. Were there those who did recognize Him and His call? Who, when Jesus passed through the anger and outrage, turned also and followed him? Luke doesn’t say. But it begs the question for us today. When we are challenged by Christ’s call, let’s pray that we will have the humility to keep our eyes on Jesus, trust Him, and follow Him.

Volver a casa no siempre es fácil. Al principio de su ministerio público, Jesús regresa a Nazaret. La noticia de sus maravillas ha comenzado a difundirse e incluso hay rumores de un “Mesías”. ¿Este podría ser realmente el elegido? ¿El hijo de José? Imagínate si un niño con el que creciste resultara ser el salvador del mundo. ¿De verdad? ¿Ese tipo?

Pero allí está, sentado con ellos en la sinagoga. Sabe lo que están pensando; la gente quiere que Él haga en Nazaret lo que han oído que hizo en Capernaúm. Pero Jesús no está allí para deslumbrar. Está en casa para entregar un mensaje: Tengan fe, parece decir. Será más difícil para ustedes creer porque han crecido conmigo, pero tengan fe. Esperen lo inesperado. Les recuerda su historia compartida cuando Dios tejió la historia de la salvación con hilos inesperados. Jesús está allí para decirles a estas amadas personas que aquí hay otro hilo inesperado.

Entonces, como para comprobar su punto, se vuelven contra Él. Se llenan de ira. Estas personas que conocen a Jesús desde que era niño se enfadan tanto con su mensaje que lo llevan a las afueras de la ciudad y planean arrojarlo por un precipicio. Sí, volver a casa puede ser difícil, de plano.

¿Responderíamos de forma diferente? La gente de la época de Jesús no era nada diferente a la gente de hoy. Igual que ellos, tenemos una tradición de fe que conocemos y en la que confiamos. Nos consuela el mensaje familiar, pero cuando ese mensaje exige algo incómodo, podemos enojarnos. Cuando la fe enseña lo que no queremos oír o insiste en enseñar un estándar moral que es difícil de vivir, nuestra arrogancia exige que la fe cambie en lugar de nuestros corazones. La arrogancia que despertó la ira en esa sinagoga de Nazaret sigue despertándose. Y, al igual que en aquel tiempo, el único antídoto es la humildad.

La humildad se enfrenta a los desafíos de la fe y ora por fortaleza. La humildad pide los dones del Espíritu Santo para moderar la arrogancia: sabiduría, entendimiento, consejo, conocimiento, piedad, temor del Señor y, por supuesto, fortaleza. Valentía. Valentía para dejarnos moldear por nuestra fe en lugar de exigir que la moldeemos nosotros, y la valentía para reconocer el rostro de nuestro Salvador en lugares inesperados.

Al final, la multitud no logró arrojar a Jesús por el precipicio porque “pasando por en medio de ellos, se alejó de allí” (Lucas 4,30). En su furia, no pudieron ver lo que estaba justo delante de ellos: el Mesías, el Salvador. ¿Hubo quienes lo reconocieron a Él y su llamado? ¿Quiénes, cuando Jesús pasó por la ira y la indignación, se dieron la vuelta también y lo siguieron? Lucas no lo dice, pero nos plantea la pregunta hoy. Cuando nos vemos desafiados por el llamado de Cristo, oremos para que tengamos la humildad de mantener los ojos en Jesús, confiar en Él y seguirlo.

Healing Relationships / Sanar las relaciones interpersonales

In today’s Gospel from Luke Jesus preaches the parable of the barren fig tree. The tree has borne no fruit for three years, so he tells the gardener to get rid of the tree. But the gardener tells the person that they need to put time and effort into taking care of the tree and if it doesn’t bear fruit after that, they would cut it down.

I believe that this parable given by Jesus was meant for how we should go about our relationships with one another. To be able to forgive and give time to relationships that are strained, to heal and allow the “barren tree” to bear fruits of goodness. Even if the relationship doesn’t bear fruit, we can find peace knowing that we did our best to mend the relationship. Making the sacrifice to overcome our pride to mend and heal broken relationships can be part of the suffering we endure during Lent.

As we look forward to reaching the end of Lent and beginning the joyous time of Easter, I invite you to reflect on where your relationships are not only spiritually but also with one another. As we approach Easter, we can reflect on where we can improve personally and also find healing in our relationships with others, so as to participate fully in Easter joy.

En el Evangelio de hoy de Lucas, Jesús predica la parábola de la higuera estéril. El árbol no ha dado fruto durante tres años, por lo que le dice al jardinero que se deshaga del árbol. Pero el jardinero le dice a la persona que necesita dedicar tiempo y esfuerzo a cuidar el árbol y si no da fruto después de eso, lo cortará.

Creo que esta parábola dada por Jesús tenía como objetivo cómo debemos abordar nuestras relaciones con los demás. Ser capaces de perdonar y dar tiempo a las relaciones que están tensas, sanar y permitir que el “árbol estéril” dé frutos de bondad. Incluso si la relación no da fruto, podemos encontrar paz sabiendo que hicimos lo mejor que pudimos para reparar la relación. Hacer el sacrificio de superar nuestro orgullo para reparar y sanar las relaciones rotas puede ser parte del sufrimiento que soportamos durante la Cuaresma.

Mientras anticipamos llegar al final de la Cuaresma y comenzar el tiempo alegre de la Pascua, los invito a reflexionar sobre cómo están sus relaciones no solo espiritualmente sino también entre sí. The Lord Comes Out to Meet Us / El Señor sale a nuestro encuentro

The Parable of the Prodigal Son is a favorite to many. Much of our focus is on the brothers and their different approaches to their relationship with their father. What struck me this time was the fact that the father goes out to meet both of the brothers for very different reasons.

The father running to the younger son feels quite dramatic. The son who literally took the money and ran (away), who has been gone and out of touch for an extended period of time, returns empty-handed, ready to beg for mercy and forgiveness.

If you’ve ever been excited to see a family member or friend after an extended time away and ran towards them for a hug, you know the energy that transfers into a strong hug. Now imagine this happening to you when you expect to be met with resistance and unforgiveness.

The younger son, now humbled by his worldly experience, doesn’t feel worthy of the hug. He comes bearing apologies and shame, but the father won’t let him try to belittle himself anymore. The father closes the door on the past by letting his son know: the old life is forgotten; welcome home where you belong. The father goes on to call for a celebration.

God the Father runs to the sinner who leaves their old life behind and walks toward home, toward the Church. Sometimes those with major conversion experiences can seem like they advance so much more quickly than those of us who have remained close to home, but the truth is in God’s mercy. He doesn’t want doubt to overcome the sinner so He runs out to meet him and walk with him the remainder of the way home, speaking to him of his identity as his son.

The older son has an adverse reaction to this welcome. He stays outside, refusing to go into the celebration, feeling that he has been slighted. The father realizes his older son is missing and comes out to search for him. When he finds him he is met with questions and frustration so he also speaks into the older son’s identity as son: “everything I have is yours.” (Luke 15:31) He reminds him All that matters is that both are now with him. For the father there is no measuring between one son and another. He explains to the older son that the celebration is not about the volume of work produced (or not), but instead is about the conversion of heart – that his brother is no longer dead, but alive.

God wants nothing more than all of us to live life with Him. Therefore He comes out to meet us when we have sinned and are seeking mercy. He meets us in our stubbornness and indignation and reminds us of who He has called us to be: brothers and sisters in Christ – not in competition with one another, but instead in companionship with one another.

La parábola del hijo pródigo es una de las favoritas de muchas personas. Gran parte de nuestra atención se centra en los hermanos y las formas diferentes en que se relacionan con su padre. Lo que me llamó la atención esta vez fue el hecho de que el padre sale a recibir a ambos hermanos por razones muy distintas.

El padre que corre hacia el hijo menor parece bastante dramático. El hijo que literalmente tomó el dinero y huyó, que ha estado fuera y sin contacto durante un período prolongado, regresa con las manos vacías, listo para pedir misericordia y perdón.

Si alguna vez te has emocionado al ver a un familiar o amigo después de un largo tiempo y te has corrido hacia él para abrazarlo, sabes la energía que se convierte en un fuerte abrazo. Ahora imagina que esto te sucede cuando esperas encontrarte con resistencia y falta de perdón.

El hijo menor, ahora humillado por su experiencia mundana, no se siente digno del abrazo. Viene con disculpas y vergüenza, pero el padre no le permite intentar a menospreciarse más. El padre cierra la puerta al pasado haciéndole saber a su hijo: tu vida anterior se ha quedado en el pasado; bienvenido a casa, donde perteneces. El padre continúa convocando una celebración.

Dios Padre corre hacia el pecador que deja atrás su vida anterior y camina hacia su hogar, hacia la Iglesia. A veces, puede parecer que los que han tenido experiencias fuertes de conversión avancen mucho más rápido que los que hemos permanecido cerca de la casa, pero la verdad está en la misericordia de Dios. No quiere que la duda se apodere del pecador, así que corre a su encuentro y camina con él el resto del camino a casa, hablándole de su identidad como hijo suyo.

El hijo mayor tiene una reacción adversa a esta bienvenida. Se queda afuera, negándose a entrar en la celebración, sintiéndose despreciado. El padre se da cuenta de que su hijo mayor ha desaparecido y sale a buscarlo. Cuando lo encuentra, se enfrenta con preguntas y frustración, por lo que también le habla al hijo mayor de su identidad como hijo suyo: “todo lo mío es tuyo” (Lucas 15,31). Le recuerda que lo único que importa es que ahora ambos están con él. Para el padre no hay medida entre un hijo y otro. Le explica al hijo mayor que la celebración no se trata del volumen de trabajo producido (o no), sino de la conversión del corazón: que su hermano ya no está muerto, sino vivo.

Lo que Dios más quiere es que todos vivamos la vida con Él. Por eso, sale a nuestro encuentro cuando hemos pecado y buscamos misericordia. Nos encuentra en nuestra terquedad e indignación y nos recuerda quiénes nos ha llamado a ser: hermanos y hermanas en Cristo, no en competencia unos con otros, sino en compañerismo unos con otros.

Tenants of God’s Vineyard / Viñadores del viñedo de Dios

This Gospel parable sums it up. God (the landowner) created Jerusalem (the vineyard) and gave it to Israel’s leaders (the tenants) to manage. He then sent his prophets (the servants) to help people learn of Him and know Him. The leaders killed and rejected those prophets so God sent Jesus, His Son, to forgive sins and save the people. The leaders rejected Him as well and put Him to death.

We know that Jesus rose from death and became the cornerstone of God’s Kingdom, the Kingdom he gave to new tenants with a new covenant. The Apostles went across the world preaching this new covenant of forgiveness and salvation to all. Jesus’ message of salvation was extended to non-Jews as far away as Greece and Rome.

What does this mean for us Christians in 21st century America? The same Gospel message the Apostles preached is relevant to us today. It hasn’t changed in over 2000 years! Jesus came to forgive our sins and offer us salvation and eternity with him. How do we respond in this post-Christian world that is turning its gaze from this Good News? Will we respond like the early tenants and reject these hard teachings? Or will we respond like the servants and attempt to share it with those around us?

It used to be okay to talk about Jesus when everyone believed. Now, as Catholics, we face apathy and hostility from those around us. We may not be physically put to death but we may be socially wounded. We may find ourselves more and more in the minority because we’ve chosen to keep Christ at the center of our lives.

That’s ok! Jesus warned us we’d be persecuted for His sake but just like in today’s parable, we, the faithful, see God’s marvelous deeds. God lavishes us with grace through the sacraments to give us strength to proclaim not just in how we live our lives but in words (because words are important) how good God is, how great His love is, and how much He desires to be with us in heaven. Are you up for the challenge? You’re not alone because He is so good!

Esta parábola del Evangelio lo resume todo. Dios (el propietario) creó a Jerusalén (el viñedo) y se la dio a los líderes de Israel (los viñadores) para que la administraran. Luego envió a sus profetas (los criados) para ayudar a la gente a aprender de Él y conocerlo. Los líderes mataron y rechazaron a esos profetas, por lo que Dios envió a Jesús, Su Hijo, para perdonar los pecados y salvar al pueblo. Los líderes también lo rechazaron y lo condenaron a muerte.

Sabemos que Jesús resucitó de entre los muertos y se convirtió en la piedra angular del Reino de Dios, el Reino que dio a los nuevos labradores con una nueva alianza. Los apóstoles recorrieron el mundo predicando esta nueva alianza de perdón y salvación para todos. El mensaje de salvación de Jesús se extendió a los no judíos tan lejos como Grecia y Roma.

¿Qué significa esto para nosotros los cristianos en los Estados Unidos del siglo XXI? El mismo mensaje del Evangelio que predicaron los apóstoles es relevante para nosotros hoy. ¡No ha cambiado en más de 2000 años! Jesús vino a perdonar nuestros pecados y ofrecernos salvación y eternidad con él. ¿Cómo respondemos en este mundo post-cristiano que está apartando su mirada de esta Buena Nueva? ¿Responderemos como los primeros labradores y rechazaremos estas duras enseñanzas? ¿O responderemos como los sirvientes e intentaremos compartirlas con quienes nos rodean?

Antes era fácil hablar de Jesús cuando todos creían. Ahora, como católicos, enfrentamos la apatía y la hostilidad de quienes nos rodean. Puede que no seamos condenados a muerte físicamente, pero podemos ser heridos socialmente. Podemos encontrarnos cada vez más en minoría porque hemos elegido mantener a Cristo en el centro de nuestras vidas.

¡Está bien! Jesús nos advirtió que seríamos perseguidos por su causa, pero al igual que en la parábola de hoy, nosotros, los fieles, vemos las maravillosas obras de Dios. Dios nos colma de gracia a través de los sacramentos para darnos fuerza para proclamar, no sólo en nuestra forma de vivir sino también con palabras (porque las palabras son importantes), cuán bueno es Dios, cuán grande es su amor y cuánto desea estar con nosotros en el cielo. ¿Estás preparado para el desafío? ¡No estás solo porque Dios es tan bueno!

Trust in the Lord / Confiar en el Señor

If I were to sum up all the readings in a few words I would say, “Trust in the Lord.” What else needs to be said? If we fully trust in the Lord, our actions will reflect our beliefs, and our beliefs will help us to do what is morally correct. It is a circle. The more we trust, the more we behave as a believer, the greater our trust grows and the more we want to do what is right and good and holy.

It is not easy to trust and do what is right. We are often so overwhelmed and sure that we have the answers. We rely on our understanding rather than God’s and then situations go sideways.

In the Gospel we learn what happens when we wait and see instead of living as God calls us to live. It is a reminder to act promptly when we are asked to do something for God. The timing may be inconvenient, the effort difficult, or the return on the work not immediately recognizable. Do it anyway. I have learned over and over that when God says step up, it is best to do so. You will have peace. You may not fully understand, but that’s okay. As someone who is sometimes overly reliant on the plan, I have learned to shift my plan and focus on the best outcome. Surprise, I do not always know the best outcome. God does.

When you work with Him, pay attention to where He leads you and accept His offer of guidance, it will lead you to a better place. It can be a place you had never thought of, but God has it all ready for you. The first step is trust. When we trust, we grow. Begin in small ways to trust and watch what happens.

Give up 20 minutes of your day to prayer. You will have time to do what you need to do in a day. When faced with a decision, ask yourself what Jesus would do and then do it. When people are rude in a conversation, don’t react or reply, let it go. You will be blessed. As Jeremiah says, “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, whose hope is the LORD. (17:7).

Si tuviera que resumir todas las lecturas en pocas palabras, diría: “Confiar en el Señor”. ¿Qué más hay que decir? Si confiamos plenamente en el Señor, nuestras acciones reflejarán nuestras creencias, y nuestras creencias nos ayudarán a hacer lo que es moralmente correcto. Es un círculo. Cuanto más confiamos, cuanto más nos comportamos como creyentes, más crece nuestra confianza y más queremos hacer lo que es correcto, bueno y santo.

Puede ser un lugar en el que nunca habías pensado, pero Dios lo tiene todo listo para ti. El primer paso es confiar. Cuando confiamos, crecemos. Dedica 20 minutos de tu día a la oración. Tendrás tiempo para hacer lo que necesitas hacer durante el día. Cuando te enfrentes a una decisión, pregúntate qué haría Jesús y luego hazlo. Cuando las personas sean groseras en una conversación, no reacciones ni respondas, déjalo pasar. Serás bendecido. Como dice el profeta Jeremías: “Bendito el hombre que confía en el Señor y en él pone su esperanza.” (17,7).

St. Joseph Teaches Us the Next Best Step / San José nos enseña el siguiente paso

Mary and Joseph have two different “annunciations” from the angel, two different tasks in the mystery of salvation, and two different paths to holiness. United in one love, they hand themselves over to the work of the redemption being accomplished by God in Christ Jesus, Son of God and Son of the Virgin Mary.

Joseph struggled when he discovered Mary was with child. Whether his anguish flowed from his feelings of unworthiness or from incomprehension of what was happening, the result was the same: he planned to dismiss Mary quietly. It was only the annunciation of the angel that put his heart at ease. Immediately upon awakening, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took Mary as his wife.

In our families and communities, each of us has a different role in the mystery of salvation. We all have different personalities. We each follow the Spirit’s invitation, yet the full scope of this call remains a secret to ourselves as much of it is unknown to others. The way our place in the drama of salvation unfolds is gradual and often shrouded in mystery.

When I’m not quite understanding someone I live with, I’d love for an angel to show up, even in a dream, and let me in on the details. How much easier it would be to respect people who are clashing with me if I could see the plan God was accomplishing through them! Even Joseph, although he had an angelic visitation to resolve his doubts, was only told the next step God required of him and no more. For the rest he had to trust in the Providence of God and he had to trust Mary.

Joseph teaches me how to take the next best step and to trust that God is working out something far beyond my wildest imagination. There are many “angels” in our lives. Sometimes they show up as inspirations, a word from Scripture, a thoughtful comment from a friend, or a combination of events that make the next step so abundantly clear it can’t be doubted. Trust, on the threshold of mystery, is always a risk and a choice. It is a determined turning away from the doubts and rationalizations of the past toward the possibilities and promises of a future rich with God’s presence.

María y José tienen dos “anuncios” diferentes del ángel, dos tareas diferentes en el misterio de la salvación y dos caminos diferentes hacia la santidad. Unidos en un solo amor, se entregan a la obra de la redención que Dios está realizando en Cristo Jesús, Hijo de Dios e Hijo de la Virgen María.

José batalló cuando descubrió que María estaba embarazada. Ya sea que su angustia se debiera a sus sentimientos de indignidad o a la incomprensión de lo que estaba sucediendo, el resultado fue el mismo: planeó despedir a María en silencio. Fue solo el anuncio del ángel lo que tranquilizó su corazón. Inmediatamente después de despertar, hizo lo que el ángel del Señor le ordenó y tomó a María como su esposa.

En nuestras familias y comunidades, cada uno de nosotros tiene un papel diferente en el misterio de la salvación. Todos tenemos personalidades diferentes. José me enseña cómo dar el siguiente paso y confiar en que Dios está obrando algo mucho más allá de lo que podría imaginar. Hay muchos “ángeles” en nuestras vidas. A veces aparecen como inspiraciones, una palabra de las Escrituras, un comentario reflexivo de un amigo o una combinación de eventos que hacen que el siguiente paso sea tan claro que no se puede dudar. Tener confianza, en el umbral del misterio, es siempre un riesgo y una decisión. Es un giro decidido desde las dudas y racionalizaciones del pasado hacia las posibilidades y las promesas de un futuro lleno de la presencia de Dios.

The Weak Lead the Strong / Los débiles guían a los fuertes

I am not sure that I am the right person to offer today’s reflection. I hate being unseen. I want to be noticed and honored. I hate being weak and not good enough – the exact same things the Pharisees are trying to avoid – and what does Jesus do? He issues many condemnations upon them.

In good Ignatian fashion, I place myself into this scene and I am one of the Pharisees wearing a giant phylactery on my head and tassels longer than I am tall. It is laughable really. We talk a good talk, but our walk is far from God. I have deep wounds that trigger my desires for recognition and acceptance. I wonder if the same was true for the Pharisees. Why did they seek places of honor and prestige? We all desire to be seen and known by God (CCC 27), but are we demanding others to fill this role? Only an honest examination of conscience can help us answer this.

Are my actions humble?

Do I hold those I have authority over – children, employees, students, or patients – to severe standards without offering help?
In my efforts to prove myself, am I unknowingly putting unrealistic expectations on those around me?
Do I complain about or seek attention from my family for all that I do?
Do I seek attention through actions or in conversations so as to be seen as more holy, religious, intellectual, or socially connected?

If I work within the Church, am I giving of myself with generosity or resentment? Do I judge and gossip about those who don’t fall into the norms of the faith?

Jesus calls all of us to leadership whether in the home, the Church, or in the world. That is what discipleship is – leadership. St. Paul confirms what Jesus showed us in choosing weak and lowly men to be His closest 12 disciples (1 Cor 1:26-29). Jesus wants humble disciples who will serve. He demonstrated this in His own life.

God could have come in strength, majesty, and power to lead as a king, but instead, He came as an infant dependent on Joseph and Mary. He came with authority but taught others by His example of service (like when He washed His disciples’ feet in John 13). Jesus calls us today to see ourselves for who we are, beloved children of God, fully dependent on the Father, weak on our own, but strong in humble service of God and neighbor.

No estoy seguro que sea la persona adecuada para ofrecer la reflexión de hoy. No me gusta cuando nadie me ve. Quiero que me noten y me honren. No me gusta ser débil y no ser lo suficientemente bueno (exactamente las mismas cosas que los fariseos intentaban evitar), y ¿qué hace Jesús? Los condena fuertemente.

Al estilo ignaciano, me coloco en esta escena y soy uno de los fariseos que lleva una filacteria gigante en la cabeza y borlas más largas que mi altura. De verdad es ridículo. Me pregunto si lo mismo era cierto para los fariseos. ¿Por qué buscaban lugares de honor y prestigio? Todos deseamos ser vistos y conocidos por Dios (CIC 27), pero ¿estamos exigiendo a otros que desempeñen este papel? Solo un examen de conciencia honesto puede ayudarnos a responder a esta pregunta.

¿Son humildes mis acciones?

¿Exijo a los que están bajo mi autoridad (niños, empleados, estudiantes o pacientes) estándares severos sin ofrecerles ayuda?
En mis esfuerzos por demostrar mi valía, ¿estoy poniendo inconscientemente expectativas poco realistas en quienes me rodean?
¿Me quejo o busco la atención de mi familia por todo lo que hago?
¿Busco atención a través de acciones o en conversaciones para que me vean como más santo, religioso, intelectual o socialmente conectado?
Si trabajo dentro de la Iglesia, ¿me doy con generosidad o resentimiento? ¿Juzgo y chismorreo de quienes no caen dentro de las normas de la fe?

Jesús nos llama a todos al liderazgo, ya sea en el hogar, la Iglesia o en el mundo. Eso es el discipulado: liderazgo. San Pablo confirma lo que Jesús nos mostró al elegir a hombres débiles y humildes para que fueran sus 12 discípulos más cercanos (1 Cor 1,26-29). Jesús quiere discípulos humildes que sirvan. Lo demostró en su propia vida.

Dios podría haber venido con fuerza, majestad y poder para dirigir como un rey, pero en lugar de eso, vino como un bebé que dependía de José y María. Vino con autoridad, pero enseñó a otros a través de su ejemplo de servicio (como cuando lavó los pies de sus discípulos en Juan 13). Jesús nos llama hoy a vernos como somos, hijos amados de Dios, totalmente dependientes del Padre, débiles por nosotros mismos, pero fuertes en el servicio humilde a Dios y al prójimo.
