Liturgical Ministries

For all those discerning ministry at St. Mary Parish,

We ask that you prayerfully consider the following, that Christ calls all of us to give of ourselves to others. Through our baptism and confirmation he has conferred upon us special graces and charisms, which allow us to carry out the calling he asks of our lives. This brings us to a process known as discernment, where we bring before God all the gifts that he has given us and ask him what he wants us to do with them. We all have multiple gifts but it is important for us to ask God what he wants us to use in this specific season of our life. You are encouraged to spend some time in prayer and to ask God what gifts He has given you and what He would like you to do with those gifts (ie, where He can use them through you).

“There are different kinds of spiritual gifts but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifestation of the Spirit is given for some benefit. To one is given through the Spirit the expression of wisdom; to another the expression of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit; to another mighty deeds; to another prophecy; to another discernment of spirits; to another varieties of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit produces all of these, distributing them individually to each person as he wishes.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-11

We ask that all ministers are in good standing with the Roman Catholic Church. Anyone interested in the ministries of Lector or Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist should be confirmed in the Catholic Church.

Altar Servers – This ministry is for the young men of the parish. It includes the many responsibilities service to the priest and deacon with in the Mass. It will require reverence and focus as they come before the Lord and humbly serve at his altar.

Altar Servers should arrive no later than 10 minutes before the Mass.

“My dear sons, assist at Mass as true and devout Christians, with such modesty and recollection, that nothing may distract you. Let your mind and heart be intent solely on honoring God.” – St. John Bosco

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist (EME)

This ministry is for those who feel a strong devotion, reverence, and calling to bring Jesus Christ to others around them, both in the Eucharist and in the way that they live their lives. It is a natural extension of what they do on a daily basis. While the ordinary ministers of the Eucharist (the priest or deacon) are given a special grace through their ordination, those called to this ministry must be constantly mindful of the extraordinary grace being provided to them to serve God’s people in distributing Jesus in the Eucharist.

Ushers – The position of Usher is one of great necessity. Ushers provide guidance and direction for those who are visiting, for any situations of a medical nature that may come up, and for the safety of the environment during the Liturgy.

Greeters – Those called to this ministry should have a heart for the people of God, a desire to share the joy of welcoming each and every individual who walks through the door, to be compassionate listeners, and helpful guides should someone have a question about the parish.

Sacristans  – This ministry is design to include our young women in the preparation and Advent of each liturgy. They will help to prepare the sacred vessels for the liturgy; the bread and the wine that will become the Body and Blood of our Lord Jesus. Then after the Mass they will assist in the either the clean up or the reset for the next Mass. Like Mary they will wait upon the Lord and prepare a place for him both at the Mass and in their hearts.

They will need to arrive at least 10-15 minutes before the Mass, be dressed in modest attire.

Lectors – Our lectors have a very important job of proclaiming the Word of God to this very community. It is much more than just reading, it is a call to PROCLAIM the Word to others. We are looking for people who can read and speak clearly, who can remain humble of heart while called to speak the Word of God boldly and with conviction.

We ask that our Lectors arrive 10-15 minutes before the Mass and  be dressed in modest attire.
