The Mark of Discipleship / La marca del discipulado

Today’s Gospel is only found in Matthew, Mark and Luke, and out of those three, Luke is the only one who mentions that carrying our cross is to be a daily offering. How fitting then, that we hear this passage the day after Ash Wednesday, when the beginning of Lent presents us with challenges, both new and old, and invites us into deeper communion with Jesus in His suffering and death. 

Maybe it’s just me, but Ash Wednesday usually feels a lot like New Years. We make firm resolutions about what we will not do or good things we want to add to our lives during Lent and within the first few days a good many of us are struggling to remember what we should (or should not) be doing. Then we feel guilty when we catch ourselves in mid bite of that brownie, or half way through that burger on a Friday.

“Daily” is an interesting word for Luke to add into this discourse. Notice that Luke doesn’t say: daily during certain liturgical seasons, or, daily if you can. No. He calls us to intentional and constant action throughout Lent, and the other 325 days of the year as well. During Lent, it may be easier to carry our daily crosses as we try to keep our Lenten resolutions. However, I encourage you to use this season to examine how your heart might be changed for the rest of the year as well.

Some of us have large crosses that weigh heavily on us throughout our lives. Others, however, can be small and difficult to identify as a chance to follow Jesus more closely. I can give you an example from my own life. There was a time while I was in college, when my mental health was dangerously bad. Facing that in a way that was safe and practical was a constant cross for me and I felt the daily weight of that struggle. However, now I have a great support system, my dream job, and am planning a wedding. Life often feels perfect and it can be difficult to find where I can daily carry my cross. Those are the days I might choose not to listen to music in the car, and instead say extra prayers of reparation for those who don’t know Christ. Or, as a person who LOVES sleep and struggles to get out of bed, I might get up earlier to make the coffee for my household. 

This is the mark of discipleship: choosing acts of charity, big or small, as Christ showed charity to every person he encountered, especially during His Passion. It has been beautiful to see the Lord working in my life once I learned to view my personal crosses as an opportunity that Jesus gives only to me, allowing me to lessen the suffering of His passion by uniting my sufferings to His. I encourage you to use the next 40 days to open your heart to the ways you might embrace old crosses, discover new crosses, and learn to carry them in charity out of love for Christ and His Passion.

Ash Wednesday

Reading 1 Joel 2:12-18

Even now, says the LORD,
return to me with your whole heart,
with fasting, and weeping, and mourning;
Rend your hearts, not your garments,
and return to the LORD, your God.
For gracious and merciful is he,
slow to anger, rich in kindness,
and relenting in punishment.
Perhaps he will again relent
and leave behind him a blessing,
Offerings and libations

Return to Me / Vuélvanse a Mí

I was on retreat several years ago and found myself standing alone next to a still pond surrounded by trees. Across the pond from me was a crucifix raised on a pole such that I could look straight at it. I felt God calling to me with the words at the beginning of our first reading today: “return to Me with your whole heart.” This simple request sank deep into my soul.

Return to Me. Give yourself entirely to Me. Trust Me. Let Me care for you and pour Myself out for you. Don’t let your worries and concerns stand between us. Don’t let your desire for approval make you forget who you are living for. You are Mine.

It was there that I gave myself more completely to God, where I made a commitment to Him that I would continuously dedicate myself to Him. We hear this same call in the Gospel today, on this Ash Wednesday as we enter into Lent. May we return to God with all our hearts. May our hearts not be divided, but may we give them entirely to God.

It is so easy for us, as we live this life in the flesh, to do what is asked of us but for the wrong reasons, such as seeking approval from others. Perhaps we allow others to see us piously carrying out our Lenten obligations so that we may be counted among the holy or admired by them.

We are called to give ourselves to God and to live our lives for Him, including fasting, giving alms, and praying, making sacrifices to Him out of love rather than for any other reason. When we do things for others, it is to be for the sake of God and those He has put in our lives, not to serve our own egos.

This illustrates a larger point. Giving ourselves to God involves two main movements which go hand in hand. One is turning away from the things of the flesh. The other is turning toward God. Repentance from sin leads to reconciliation with God. Detachment from worldly things creates space for Him to abide in us.

This summons to return to the Lord with our whole heart requires both movements, fueled by His grace. It is to turn away from the desires and lures of the world in order to give our entire heart, our entire selves to God. Undivided and unreserved. This is a lifetime endeavor for most of us, myself included. But Lent is the perfect time to step further into it.

This Lent, I encourage you to offer each sacrifice up for God. Offer them in outward silence and in love to the One who sees all and who abides with you in your inmost being, to the One who delights in you, longs for you, and gives Himself up for you.

Hace varios años estuve en un retiro espiritual y me encontré sola junto a un estanque tranquilo rodeado de árboles. Al otro lado del estanque había un crucifijo colocado sobre un poste de modo que podía mirarlo directamente. Sentí que Dios me llamaba con las palabras que aparecen al principio de la primera lectura de hoy: “Vuélvanse a Mí de todo corazón”. Esta simple petición me tocó muy profundamente.

Vuélvete a Mí. Entrégate completamente a Mí. Confía en Mí. Déjame cuidarte y entregarme por ti. No dejes que tus preocupaciones e inquietudes se interpongan entre nosotros. No dejes que tu deseo de aprobación te haga olvidar para Quién vives. Tú eres Mía.

Fue allí donde me entregué más completamente a Dios, donde me comprometí con Él a dedicarme continuamente a Él. Escuchamos este mismo llamado en el Evangelio de hoy, en este Miércoles de Ceniza al entrar en la Cuaresma. Que volvamos a Dios con todo el corazón. Que nuestros corazones no se dividan, sino que se los entreguemos por completo a Dios.

Es muy fácil para nosotros, mientras vivimos esta vida en la carne, hacer lo que se nos pide, pero por razones equivocadas, como buscar la aprobación de los demás. Tal vez permitimos que los demás nos vean cumpliendo piadosamente con nuestras obligaciones cuaresmales para que seamos contados entre los santos o admirados por ellos.

Estamos llamados a entregarnos a Dios y vivir la vida para Él, incluyendo el ayuno, la limosna y la oración, haciendo sacrificios para Él por amor más que por cualquier otra razón. Cuando hacemos cosas por los demás, es para el bien de Dios y de aquellos que Él ha puesto en nuestras vidas, no para servir a nuestros propios egos.

Esto ilustra un punto más amplio. Entregarnos a Dios implica dos movimientos principales que van de la mano. Uno es alejarnos de las cosas de la carne. El otro es volvernos hacia Dios. Reading 1 Sirach 35:1-12

To keep the law is a great oblation,
and he who observes the
commandments sacrifices a peace offering.
In works of charity one offers fine flour,
and when he gives alms he presents his sacrifice of praise.
To refrain from evil pleases the LORD,
and to avoid injustice is an atonement.
Appear not before the LORD empty-handed,
for all that you offer is in fulfillment of the precepts.
The just one’s offering enriches the altar
and rises as a sweet odor before the Most High.
The just one’s sacrifice is most pleasing,
nor will it ever be forgotten.
In a generous spirit pay homage to the LORD,
be not sparing of freewill gifts.
With each contribution show a cheerful countenance,

God Cannot be Outdone / Dios no puede ser superado

You just have to love Peter. Sure, he is blunt. Sure, he is thick headed. But he is honest with Jesus and Jesus responds. 

Peter seems to be looking back to his roots as a fisherman. He was a working man who took care of his family. The fruits of his labor could be counted and stored away for a future need. In today’s Gospel, Peter appears to be having a touch of cold feet. All of a sudden, the future seems unsure, unclear. “We have given up everything and followed you,” he says. Is he asking for an answer about what is next? 

What Jesus promises is a radical shift. He redirects Peter from worrying about his future to focusing on the coming good, the common good. They are building the Kingdom of God where the order of things is not like the order of things in this world. 

For us, Jesus is not asking us to turn our backs on our responsibilities. On the contrary, if we have built our lives on God’s will, we will have responsibilities which will help us do our part in building His kingdom. But as we do that, as we meet responsibilities, as we work toward the greater good, which is the establishment of God’s Kingdom on earth, we are to do so with generosity of spirit. 

We have the freedom to work together in God’s plan. That freedom comes at a cost. There will be suffering, there will be persecutions, and there will be heartache but God repays a hundredfold. He is not to be outdone in generosity. Whatever widow’s mite of good we can do, God will return to us greatly increased. Increased by the community we build together here, increased by what comes after this life. 

Not only that, we can ask God’s grace. We are not in this alone! We should not be dismayed when things don’t go our way, because we are confident that there is a greater good at work. We can seek out and develop relationships with like-minded people who are also committed to working for God’s purpose. We can cultivate a community where we are focused not on what is next for ourselves, but what is next for all those whom God loves. 

For those times when we relate to Peter’s cold feet, when we start to put our concerns about our personal well-being first and the future seems unclear, we can follow Peter’s example and go to Jesus in all honesty. “Lord, I have given up everything and followed you.” God will respond. He cannot be outdone in generosity.

Me encanta el carácter de Pedro. Claro, es brusco. Claro, es terco. Pero es honesto con Jesús y Jesús le responde.

Pedro parece estar recordando sus raíces como pescador. Era un hombre trabajador que cuidaba de su familia. Los frutos de su trabajo podían contarse y almacenarse para una necesidad futura. En el Evangelio de hoy, Pedro parece tener un poco de miedo. De repente, el futuro parece incierto, poco claro. “Señor, ya ves que nosotros lo hemos dejado todo para seguirte”, dice. ¿Está pidiendo una respuesta sobre lo que viene a futuro?

Lo que Jesús promete es un cambio radical. Redirige a Pedro de preocuparse por su futuro a centrarse en el bien venidero, el bien común. Están construyendo el Reino de Dios donde el orden de las cosas no es como el orden de las cosas de este mundo.

Para nosotros, Jesús no nos está pidiendo que le demos la espalda a nuestras responsabilidades. Por el contrario, si hemos construido nuestras vidas sobre la voluntad de Dios, tendremos responsabilidades que nos ayudarán a hacer nuestra parte en la edificación de su reino. Pero al hacer eso, al cumplir con las responsabilidades, al trabajar por el bien mayor, que es el establecimiento del Reino de Dios en la tierra, debemos hacerlo con generosidad de espíritu.

Tenemos la libertad de trabajar juntos en el plan de Dios. Esa libertad tiene un costo. Habrá sufrimiento, habrá persecuciones y habrá dolor, pero Dios paga el ciento por uno. No puede ser superado en generosidad. Por cada óbolo de la viuda que podamos dar, Dios nos lo devolverá aumentado en gran medida. Aumentado por la comunidad que construyamos juntos aquí, aumentado por lo que viene después de esta vida.

No solo eso, podemos pedir la gracia de Dios. ¡No estamos solos en esto! No debemos desanimarnos cuando las cosas no salen como queremos, porque confiamos en que hay un bien mayor en juego. Podemos buscar y desarrollar relaciones con personas que piensen como nosotros y que también estén comprometidas a trabajar por el propósito de Dios. Podemos cultivar una comunidad en la que nos centremos no en lo que viene después para nosotros, sino en lo que viene después para todos aquellos a quienes Dios ama.

Para esos momentos en los que nos identificamos con el miedo de Pedro, cuando empezamos a poner las preocupaciones sobre nuestro bienestar personal en primer lugar y el futuro parece incierto, podemos seguir el ejemplo de Pedro y acudir a Jesús con toda honestidad. “Señor, he dejado todo y te he seguido”. Dios responderá. Nadie lo puede superar en generosidad.

he encourages those who are losing hope

Turn again to the Most High and away from your sin,

in prayer to the Most High God.

Who in the nether world can glorify the Most High
in place of the living who offer their praise?
Dwell no longer in the error of the ungodly,
but offer your praise before death.

Jesus Christ became poor although he was rich,
so that by his poverty you might become rich.

Gospel Mark 10:17-27

As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up,
knelt down before him, and asked him,
“”Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?””
Jesus answered him, “”Why do you call me good?
No one is good but God alone.
You know the commandments: You shall not kill;
you shall not commit adultery;
you shall not steal;
you shall not bear false witness;
you shall not defraud;
honor your father and your mother.””

He replied and said to him,
“”Teacher, all of these I have observed from my youth.””
Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to him,
“”You are lacking in one thing.
Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor
and you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me.””
At that statement, his face fell,  
and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.

Jesus looked around and said to his disciples,
“”How hard it is for those who have wealth
to enter the Kingdom of God!””
The disciples were amazed at his words.
So Jesus again said to them in reply,
“”Children, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God!
It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle.
than for one who is rich to enter the Kingdom of God.”
They were exceedingly astonished and said among themselves,
“Then who can be saved?”
Jesus looked at them and said,
“For men it is impossible, but not for God.
All things are possible for God.”

Heavenly Treasures / Tesoros celestiales

We are all familiar with today’s Gospel story about the rich young man who is unable to surrender his wealth in order to follow Jesus, and especially Jesus’ perplexing comments about a camel and the eye of a needle.  It can be easy for us to feel superior to the young man. We imagine that OF COURSE we would give away our wealth and follow Jesus, because IT’S JESUS! 

During a conversation with my youngest son about what he had learned in his sociology class about wealth in this country, we agreed that if WE were billionaires we would be embarrassed to have so much money when we could give all of it away and do so much good in the world.

But then I remembered something Basil the Great once said: “When someone steals another’s clothes, we call them a thief. Should we not give the same name to one who could clothe the naked and does not? The bread in your cupboard belongs to the hungry; the coat unused in your closet belongs to the one who needs it; the shoes rotting in your closet belong to the one who has no shoes; the money which you hoard up belongs to the poor.”

We are not rich by any means, but like most Americans we have more than we need. How many coats do you have? I am embarrassed to say how many pairs of shoes I have. Does your bread get moldy because you do not finish it in time? Are we any better than the rich young man? There is a lot of chatter these days about minimalism and decluttering. We as a culture collectively realize that we have too many things. But paradoxically we remain a nation of consumers, and online shopping has made it simple to instantly gratify our perceived need for stuff.  

God wants so much more for us.  Was it easier for Peter, Andrew, James, and John to drop their nets, abandon their boats, and follow Jesus because they were holier than the rich young man, or because they had less to leave? Today let us consider how our possessions affect our relationship with God and our neighbor. Instead of earthly goods let us seek a deeper faith, which is much more valuable than anything this world can offer.

Todos conocemos la historia del Evangelio de hoy sobre el joven rico que no puede renunciar a su riqueza para seguir a Jesús, y especialmente los comentarios desconcertantes de Jesús sobre un camello y el ojo de una aguja. Puede ser fácil para nosotros sentirnos superiores al joven. Imaginamos que POR SUPUESTO que regalaríamos nuestra riqueza y seguiríamos a Jesús, ¡porque ES JESÚS!

Durante una conversación con mi hijo menor sobre lo que había aprendido en su clase de sociología sobre la riqueza en este país, acordamos que si NOSOTROS fuéramos multimillonarios nos avergonzaría tener tanto dinero cuando podríamos regalarlo todo y hacer tanto bien en el mundo.

Pero luego me acordé de algo que dijo una vez Basilio el Grande: “Cuando alguien roba la ropa de otro, lo llamamos ladrón. ¿No deberíamos dar el mismo nombre a quien podría vestir al desnudo y no lo hace? El pan en tu alacena pertenece al hambriento; el abrigo sin usar en tu armario pertenece al que lo necesita; los zapatos que se pudren en tu armario pertenecen al que no tiene zapatos; el dinero que atesoras pertenece a los pobres”.

No somos ricos de ninguna forma, pero como la mayoría de los estadounidenses, tenemos más de lo que necesitamos. ¿Cuántos abrigos tienes? Me da vergüenza decir cuántos pares de zapatos tengo. ¿Se te enmohece el pan porque no lo terminas a tiempo? ¿Somos mejores que el joven rico? Hoy en día se habla mucho del minimalismo y la limpieza. Como cultura, nos damos cuenta colectivamente de que tenemos demasiadas cosas. Pero, paradójicamente, seguimos siendo una nación de consumidores, y las compras en línea han hecho que sea fácil satisfacer instantáneamente la necesidad percibida de más cosas.

Dios quiere mucho más para nosotros. ¿Fue más fácil para Pedro, Andrés, Santiago y Juan dejar caer sus redes, abandonar sus barcas y seguir a Jesús porque eran más santos que el joven rico o porque tenían menos que dejar? Hoy consideremos cómo nuestras posesiones afectan nuestra relación con Dios y el prójimo. En lugar de los bienes terrenales busquemos el tesoro celestial de la fe, que es mucho más valiosa que todo lo que este mundo pueda ofrecer.

Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I Sirach 27:4-7

When a sieve is shaken, the husks appear;
so do one’s faults when one speaks.
As the test of what the potter molds is in the furnace,
so in tribulation is the test of the just.
The fruit of a tree shows the care it has had;
so too does one’s speech disclose the bent of one’s mind.
Praise no one before he speaks,
for it is then that people are tested.

Responsorial Psalm Psalm 92:2-3, 13-14, 15-16

R (cf. 2a) Lord, it is good to give thanks to you.
It is good to give thanks to the LORD,
            to sing praise to your name, Most High,

The sting of death is sin,

Gospel Luke 6:39-45

Jesus told his disciples a parable,
“Can a blind person guide a blind person?
Will not both fall into a pit?
No disciple is superior to the teacher;
but when fully trained,
every disciple will be like his teacher.
Why do you notice the splinter in your brother’s eye,
but do not perceive the wooden beam in your own?
How can you say to your brother,
‘Brother, let me remove that splinter in your eye,’
when you do not even notice the wooden beam in your own eye?
You hypocrite!  Remove the wooden beam from your eye first;
then you will see clearly
to remove the splinter in your brother’s eye.

“A good tree does not bear rotten fruit,
nor does a rotten tree bear good fruit.
For every tree is known by its own fruit.
For people do not pick figs from thornbushes,
nor do they gather grapes from brambles.
A good person out of the store of goodness in his heart produces good,
but an evil person out of a store of evil produces evil;
for from the fullness of the heart the mouth speaks.”

The Obvious Choice / La opción obvia

Sometimes, the most obvious answer is the one we find least attractive. I may know that the bathroom needs to be cleaned, but I don’t really want to clean the bathroom. So, I find many other things that need doing, pretending that they are more important than cleaning the bathroom. I give myself a false sense of accomplishment while not actually accomplishing the thing that needs doing.

In today’s Gospel, Jesus is telling his disciples some pretty obvious things. Blind people don’t lead blind people, it obviously doesn’t work. You don’t go to a bramble bush expecting to find figs. If you are having problems and making a bunch of mistakes, are you really a good person to be pointing out the flaws in others? 

What can we learn from these seemingly obvious realities? I think it shows us that Jesus deeply understands the human condition. He is fully human and he experienced all things except sin. He knows how easy it is to share our opinions and advice about how others should live their lives while taking none of it to heart in our own. He knows how we like to deceive ourselves, pretending everything is fine while we blindly follow someone else in their own blindness rather than fixing our gaze on our heavenly Father. 

Jesus is trying to wake us up, to cause us to look around and see how stuck in the muck we are. We can only be saved if we realize that we are in need of saving. When we open our eyes and hearts to the reality of our sin, of our shortcomings, of our areas of blindness, we can turn to Jesus in humility and love. He is the one to lead the blind. He is the one to point out our failings. He is the one who will give us the love, forgiveness, and food we seek.

A veces, la respuesta más obvia es la que nos parece menos atractiva. Puedo saber que hay que limpiar el baño, pero en realidad no quiero limpiarlo. Así que encuentro muchas otras cosas que hacer, fingiendo que son más importantes que limpiar el baño. Me doy una falsa sensación de logro, pero en realidad no hago lo que tengo que hacer.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús les dice a sus discípulos algunas cosas bastante obvias. Los ciegos no guían a otros ciegos, obviamente no funciona. No vas a un zarzal esperando encontrar higos. Si tienes problemas y cometes muchos errores, ¿realmente eres la persona indicada para señalarles sus defectos a los demás?

¿Qué podemos aprender de estas realidades aparentemente obvias? Creo que nos muestran que Jesús entiende profundamente la condición humana. Es completamente humano y experimentó todas las cosas menos el pecado. Sabe lo fácil que es compartir nuestras opiniones y consejos sobre cómo deberían vivir otras personas, sin tomar nada en serio en la nuestra. Sabe que nos gusta engañarnos a nosotros mismos, fingiendo que todo está bien mientras seguimos ciegamente a alguien más en su propia ceguera en lugar de fijar nuestra mirada en nuestro Padre celestial.

Jesús está tratando de despertarnos, de hacer que miremos a nuestro alrededor y veamos cuán estancados estamos en el lodo. Solo podemos ser salvados si nos damos cuenta de que somos necesitados de la salvación. Cuando abrimos los ojos y corazones a la realidad de nuestro pecado, de nuestras deficiencias, de nuestras áreas de ceguera, podemos recurrir a Jesús con humildad y amor. Él es quien guía a los ciegos. Él es quien señala nuestras fallas. Él es quien nos dará el amor, el perdón y el alimento que buscamos.

Saturday of the Seventh Week in Ordinary Time

Reading 1 Sirach 17:1-15

God from the earth created man,
and in his own image he made him.
He makes man return to earth again,
and endows him with a strength of his own.
Limited days of life he gives him,
with power over all things else on earth.
He puts the fear of him in all flesh,
and gives him rule over beasts and birds.
He created for them counsel, and a tongue and eyes and ears,  
and an inventive heart,
and filled them with the discipline of understanding.
He created in them knowledge of the spirit;
With wisdom he fills their heart;
good and evil he shows them.
He put the fear of himself upon their hearts,
and showed them his mighty works,
That they might glory in the wonder of his deeds
and praise his holy name.
He has set before them knowledge,
a law of life as their inheritance;
An everlasting covenant he has made with them,
his justice and his judgments he has revealed to them.
His majestic glory their eyes beheld,
his glorious voice their ears heard.
He says to them, “Avoid all evil”;
each of them he gives precepts about his fellow men.
Their ways are ever known to him,
they cannot be hidden from his eyes.
Over every nation he places a ruler,
but God’s own portion is Israel.
All their actions are clear as the sun to him,

for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
Amen, I say to you,
whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child
will not enter it.”
Then he embraced the children and blessed them,
