Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time

Reading I Gn 2:18-24

The LORD God said: “It is not good for the man to be alone.
I will make a suitable partner for him.”
So the LORD God formed out of the ground
various wild animals and various birds of the air,
and he brought them to the man to see what he would call them;
whatever the man called each of them would be its name. 
The man gave names to all the cattle,
all the birds of the air, and all wild animals;
but none proved to be the suitable partner for the man.

So the LORD God cast a deep sleep on the man,
and while he was asleep,
he took out one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.
The LORD God then built up into a woman the rib
that he had taken from the man.
When he brought her to the man, the man said:
    “This one, at last, is bone of my bones
        and flesh of my flesh;
    this one shall be called ‘woman, ‘
        for out of ‘her man’ this one has been taken.”
That is why a man leaves his father and mother
and clings to his wife,
and the two of them become one flesh.

He who consecrates and those who are being consecrated
all have one origin.

The Pharisees approached Jesus and asked,

“Moses permitted a husband to write a bill of divorce
and dismiss her.”
But Jesus told them,
“Because of the hardness of your hearts
he wrote you this commandment. 
But from the beginning of creation, God made them male and female. 
For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother
and be joined to his wife,
and the two shall become one flesh.

So they are no longer two but one flesh. 
Therefore what God has joined together,
no human being must separate.” 
In the house the disciples again questioned Jesus about this. 
He said to them,
“Whoever divorces his wife and marries another
commits adultery against her;
and if she divorces her husband and marries another,
she commits adultery.”

And people were bringing children to him that he might touch them,
but the disciples rebuked them.
When Jesus saw this he became indignant and said to them,
“Let the children come to me;
do not prevent them, for the kingdom of God belongs to
such as these. 
Amen, I say to you,
whoever does not accept the kingdom of God like a child
will not enter it.”
Then he embraced them and blessed them,
placing his hands on them.

Listening and Loving / Escuchar y Amar

Jesus insists that the little children can come to Him. He is available to them just as much as He is to the adults, much to the shock of the adults surrounding Him. Jesus then asks those shocked adults to consider how these children have qualities the adults are lacking. “Whoever does not accept the Kingdom of God like a child will not enter it.” As I pondered the qualities a child has, the Holy Spirit drew my attention to an aspirational prayer in a Mass journal I have.

Breathe in: Give me ears that listen

Breathe out: and a heart that loves

I found myself considering how these two motions, listening and loving, are foundational to the childhood experience and are both crucial to accept the Kingdom of God.

First, we have to listen. As children, our first experience of the world is sound. Even before we are born, babies can hear the sounds of the world outside of their mother. A young baby, days old, can barely see a few feet beyond themselves, but their hearing is perfect. They soak in sounds, language. We learn to speak first by hearing it. “At birth, the infant brain can perceive the full set of 800 or so sounds, called phonemes, that can be strung together to form all the words in every language of the world” (Patricia K. Kuhl, How Babies Learn Language, 2015). This is incredible! We have such a huge capacity for language, both to listen to and speak, as small children that fades as we grow more set in our ways as adults.

Simultaneously, babies are learning about what it means to be loved, to be cared for. They are completely reliant on their parents to love them. To love someone, to will the good of the other, is foundational for a child. As the child grows, they come to consciously perceive this and begin to freely offer that love back to their family. At lunch a few days ago, my three year old looked up and said, “Mommy, I love you. The next day, I will love you still.” It was spontaneous and spoken from his heart. 

Jesus wants to speak to us. He does so in the language we understand with our ears through the people He has placed in our lives. He also speaks to our hearts, in the language of love. These two practices, listening and loving, are beautiful lessons we can strive to grow in while we seek to become more childlike in the eyes of God.

Primero, tenemos que escuchar. Cuando somos niños, nuestra primera experiencia del mundo es el sonido. Incluso antes de nacer, los bebés pueden escuchar los sonidos del mundo fuera de su madre. Un bebé pequeño, de días de vida, apenas puede ver unos pocos pies más allá de sí mismo, pero su audición es perfecta. Absorben sonidos y lenguaje. Aprendemos a hablar primero al escucharlo. “Al nacer, el cerebro del bebé puede percibir el conjunto completo de unos 800 sonidos, llamados fonemas, que se pueden unir para formar todas las palabras de todos los idiomas del mundo” (Patricia K. Jesús quiere hablarnos. Lo hace en el lenguaje que entendemos con nuestros oídos a través de las personas que ha puesto en nuestras vidas. También habla a nuestro corazón, en el lenguaje del amor. Estas dos prácticas, escuchar y amar, son hermosas lecciones en las que podemos esforzarnos por crecer mientras buscamos ser más como niños a los ojos de Dios.

I Have Given You Power / Les He Dado Poder

The Lord is always inviting, always giving, always guiding. He invites us into His Mission, He gives us all we need to fulfill our part of it, and He is always guiding us in the surprising paths to achieve it!

He invited the 72 disciples to participate in this Mission in a particular way, gave them what they needed, and then they rejoiced in what they had been able to do in His Name. Jesus then gently guides their hearts to rejoice rightly because their “names are written in heaven.” He reminds them to rejoice in the grace of their call and cooperation, not so much in what they have done, because it is not THEY who have done it, but the Lord working through them: “I have given you the power…”

Turning to the Father, Jesus also rejoices in what the 72 have been able to do, but his joy is directed to the Father in gratitude; he is teaching them to do the same, to remember that their effectiveness and ultimate fruitfulness depend on God’s initiative and grace working in them and through them. They are mere children of the Father, but called to a glorious work and inheritance, if they remember to acknowledge the source of all true power and greatness. Those who consider themselves “learned and clever” and do things based on their own power and greatness cannot bear fruit that lasts; in fact, unless they learn true humility, they will cave in on themselves and achieve little in the long run.

It is no different for us. By our Baptism, we are invited to participate in Christ’s Mission in the world. God is always giving us all we need to fulfill our role in the Mystical Body of Christ and the Spirit of God never ceases to guide us and fill us and empower us for this mission. For our part, we must be open – whatever we sincerely open to God, He will fill! We must be willing to say YES to His invitation – our gift of freedom allows us to say no! We must recognize that whatever we accomplish in His Name is not fully our own – every good work comes through our surrender to His power in our lives! And we must seek His will and allow ourselves to be awed by the paths He calls us to walk – He is a God of surprises!

Like those Jesus called in the Gospel, we too are personally called to walk with him in humility and gratitude. To be salt for what would otherwise become tasteless and rotten, and to be light to every darkened place in this world.

St. Francis’ Mission is Ours Too / La Misión de San Francisco También es la Nuestra

On this day, we recall the great St. Francis of Assisi, an extraordinary Saint who lived his faith in such a way that he helps restore it in others. He founded the Franciscan order based on vows of poverty, serving the poor, and preaching the Good News. This order numbered in the thousands before his death, spanned many countries, and yet Francis remained humble and thanked God for the grace to evangelize. St. Francis lived his faith by embracing poverty and detaching from this world so that he could better love and serve the Lord. He met adversity with joy and patience even though he was considered by the rich and powerful to be a fool and a troublemaker.

Jesus encourages us to keep our peace when people oppose the Gospel Message. The invitation to follow Christ is an invitation to respond to the truth that the Kingdom is at hand, first focusing on our response to the Gospel and, from there, being a witness to others. We are asked to go forth and plant the seeds of faith one heart at a time.  

Trust the Lord in times of discouragement due to the state of our current culture. For He is our unwavering strength and refuge. Know that all things, even the most challenging, work for the good of those who love God (Rom 8:28). The truth is that we have an entire world to serve and share the message of Christ. Our mission has not changed since the Ascension of our Lord and Pentecost: To live our faith and share it with others through kind deeds, inspiring words, and prayer – and leave the rest to the Lord. What can you do? Embrace joy, peace, and happiness, and make the Lord your King and Savior. 

It is so easy to be overwhelmed, downtrodden, and even anxious about the matters of this world, but our Lord invites us to shake the dust off our feet, let it go, and keep moving forward. The Lord desires our faith and prayers so that we can grow closer to God and recall the old saying, “Do your best, and trust that God has the rest.” 

When we do our best to share the faith, we must be people of deep and reverent prayer. Prayer isn’t just a passing thought but a constant and continual conversation with the Lord throughout our day and throughout our lifetime. We are never too old to pray, too young to pray, too sick to pray, too happy to pray, or too sad to pray. Scripture reminds us that our prayers and ability to share the faith will have a lasting impact for all of eternity. Jesus desires to unite Himself with each individual person as well as communities and nations. He became man to heal our brokenness and restore the Kingdom of God. His desire is to heal the brokenness of others through us.

Your efforts, no matter how small, are significant in God’s grand plan. If we all work together to do our part, the earth will be set on fire with the love of Christ. May we seek to “rebuild the Church” by helping to restore the true faith in others, just as St. Francis did.

Esta orden contaba con miles de miembros antes de su muerte y se extendía por muchos países, y aun así Francisco permaneció humilde y agradeció a Dios por la gracia de poder evangelizar. San Francisco vivió su fe abrazando la pobreza y desprendiéndose de este mundo para poder amar y servir mejor al Señor. Enfrentó la adversidad con alegría y paciencia, aunque los ricos y poderosos lo consideraban un insensato y alguien que creaba problemas.

Jesús nos anima a mantener la paz cuando la gente se opone al mensaje del Evangelio. La invitación a seguir a Cristo es una invitación a responder a la verdad de que el Reino está cerca, centrándonos primero en nuestra respuesta al Evangelio y, a partir de ahí, siendo un testimonio para los demás. Se nos pide que salgamos y plantemos las semillas de la fe, un corazón a la vez.

Confía en el Señor en tiempos de desánimo debido al estado de nuestra cultura actual, pues Él es nuestra fortaleza y refugio inquebrantable. Recuerda que todas las cosas, incluso las más desafiantes, obran para el bien de quienes aman a Dios (Rom 8,28). La verdad es que tenemos un mundo entero al que servir y compartir el mensaje de Cristo. Nuestra misión no ha cambiado desde la Ascensión de nuestro Señor y Pentecostés: vivir la fe y compartirla con los demás a través de las buenas obras, palabras inspiradoras y la oración, y dejar el resto en las manos del Señor. ¿Qué puedes hacer? Abraza la alegría, la paz y la felicidad, y haz del Señor tu Rey y Salvador.

Es muy fácil sentirse abrumado, oprimido e incluso ansioso por los asuntos de este mundo, pero nuestro Señor nos invita a sacudirnos el polvo de los pies, dejarlo ir y seguir adelante. El Señor desea nuestra fe y nuestras oraciones para que podamos acercarnos más a Dios y recordar el dicho antiguo: “Haz lo mejor que puedas y confía que Dios se encargará de lo demás”.

Cuando hacemos lo mejor que podemos para compartir la fe, debemos ser personas de oración profunda y reverente. La oración no es sólo un pensamiento pasajero, sino una conversación constante y continua con el Señor a lo largo del día y de la vida. Nunca somos demasiado viejos para orar, demasiado jóvenes para orar, demasiado enfermos para orar, demasiado felices para orar o demasiado tristes para orar. Las Escrituras nos recuerdan que nuestras oraciones y nuestra capacidad para compartir la fe tendrán un impacto duradero por toda la eternidad. Jesús desea unirse a cada persona individual, así como a las comunidades y naciones. Se hizo hombre para sanar nuestra fragilidad y restaurar el Reino de Dios. Su deseo es sanar la fragilidad de los demás a través de nosotros.

Tus esfuerzos, por pequeños que sean, son significativos en el gran plan de Dios. Si todos trabajamos juntos para hacer nuestra parte, la tierra se encenderá con el amor de Cristo. Busquemos “reconstruir la Iglesia” ayudando a restaurar la verdadera fe en los demás, tal como lo hizo San Francisco.

Job said:

Pity me, pity me, O you my friends,
for the hand of God has struck me!
Why do you hound me as though you were divine,
and insatiably prey upon me?

That with an iron chisel and with lead
they were cut in the rock forever!
But as for me, I know that my Vindicator lives,
and that he will at last stand forth upon the dust;
